I am reading this from the uk. We have all sorts of problems with our National Health Service, but I am truly relieved that I am not receiving health care in the USA. It sounds crazy. And I was a doctor myself, retired 7 years. Thanks for what you do.

Hi! Thanks for bringing a perspective from the UK. The US healthcare system is nuts. If you have money, there is a lot of freedom here- which is great, but even that freedom can be very overwhelming. I used to have a patient that flew from the UK to San Francisco to see me twice a year because he couldn't get the particular thyroid medicine that he responded best to in the and it opened up a big can of worms around the limitations of the NHS- but at least you have an NHS! It's all so complex and there are so many problems to solve- but I'm doing my best to make some kind of positive impact and thank you for doing your part :)

... when we tend to that one thing, it impacts EVERYTHING

That seems so obvious now that you've pointed it out.

Thank you

I'm so glad to hear that. It never stops amazing me how connected the body is- especially when we're dealing with things like gut health and hormones and nutrient levels, etc. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I love this article SO MUCH. I have been saying this exact same thing for years and felt that I was the only one who saw taking handfuls of supplements and loads of expensive labs as a backwards approach to health. I literally posted a meme about this in my company slack the week before you wrote this. Thank you for your honesty Erica and glad I'm not alone in this thought process! :)

Thank YOU for speaking about it too. I feel like people are really misled about functional medicine and while I do think it has a lot to offer in certain contexts, I think this part of it is important and needs a voice.

This has been exactly my experience with an orthomolecular therapist in The Netherlands, except she didn't even order labs but used a computerized measurement system for diagnosis and treatment originating from space travel healthcare. There was very little explanation, only very expensive supplements. I stopped working with her after 6 months because nothing changed. Today, my GP referred me to another holistic health practitioner specializing in nutritional medicine and homeopathy, and I'm a bit hesitant to go, but the regular healthcare system is also clearly not going to do much for me.
